Hasbro unveiled the very first HasLab with the massive Vintage Collection Jabba’s Sail Barge (The Khetanna.) The project brought together a dedicated team of designers, sculptors, engineers, photographers, and artists who spent a year refining every detail of its design and development. The Sail Barge is a dream item for any Star Wars fan and collector.

With guidance from legendary toy designer Mark Boudreaux, I led the paint process for the Sail Barge prototype and figures. Airbrushing, spray painting, and hand-painting techniques were used to meticulously apply paint, wash, and drybrush effects to highlight the incredible sculpt details and achieve the ship’s weathered, “lived-in” look. Over 100 hours were spent painting the ship to completion.

The Sail Barge successfully reached 9,000 backers and released in 2019. Backers received behind-the-scenes updates throughout development, including an exclusive “Behind The Workbench” booklet.

Mini Sail Barge

Before painting the 4 ft long Sail Barge prototype, I painted a mini version for early color testing and deco approval with Lucasfilm. The 12” 3D-printed miniature allowed the team to establish the ship’s colors and visualize the full-size model. Size matters not - painting the mini Sail Barge still took over 20 hours!

Behind The Workbench:

Creating the full-sized Sail Barge prototype was a true team effort. After the ship was digitally sculpted, each part was 3D printed, the deco sheet was designed with color information, and each piece was individually painted before being assembled. Once the model was complete and approved by Lucasfilm, it was handed off to the Packaging team for their diorama photoshoot.
